Dear Tiffany…

As promised, this next set of letters are the ones I wrote with my first girlfriend, Tiffany. We actually dated for a long time and were engaged. If gay marriage had been legal, we probably would have been married. Some people describe our relationship as “puppy love”. At the time people were quite condescending about our feelings towards each other. But as an adult who is in a marriage, I look back on that relationship as a first marriage. We had committed our hearts to each other and went through a lot of things. Just because we were young didn’t minimize those feelings. Honestly, I don’t know how Tiffany looks back on our relationship. She is now married too and has her own life. So I suppose my caveat is that this story is my side of the love story. I do not speak for Tiffany. I just know these to be my truths.

The first letter is from Tiffany’s mom to my mom. She compiled a whole bunch of letters she found under Tiffany’s bed and photocopied them and faxed them to my mom and dad. I was not so good about putting dates on my letters as my grandfather was. I will try to make them as chronological as I can. The first letter I wrote is actually before Tiffany and I knew we loved each other. We were just best friends at the time. I was living with my dad in NC at the time and writing home to my “friend” Tiffany.
